will this work..?

and what size power head should I use if I were using it in a 5-10g tank?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Be sure to give yourself a way to easily maintain that filter. I could easily foresee that becoming very solid and then you would have no easy way to maintain it. That gives me an idea of something to do with my old powerheads.

The only thing I think I'd consider doing is moving the powerhead to after the filter. It means you have to prime the filter, but it would also keep less garbage going through your power head and less likely to get clogged up.

Throw a sponge on the intake of the powerhead keep the bigger crap out of the "canister".

It will work fine as is.

Improvements... Make sure the sponge is very course.
Loose the carbon unless you have a special need for it.
You can use scrubbies for the whole thing, no need for
bio-balls.
But most of all, use a power head with an aeration
function.

Check out midnight's stuff, he's made a similar one.

Now get to making it!

alright, I'd like to put the power head on the bottom of my filter but I'm not sure how air tight I'm going to be able to get my canister, hopefully all the way but I have to go to home depot and look at stuff first. I'll post pics of the pile of crap I come home with from home depot.

for my canister I was going to use 1piece of pvc tubing with end caps that I can screw and unscrew on. I was hoping on being able to load it like a old rifle, one thing at a time and a push rod to keep it tight. I figured the easier I kept it the easier it would be to maintain and the easier it would be to keep air tight.

okay thanks joe, I didn't really want to buy a box of bio balls for such a small filter anyways, I've just never used them and wanted to see how they worked. Do you have a link to midnights stuff?

I'll keep you updated..

where can I get a cheap pump for this thing or do I have to use a power head?

You can add a venturi to add air to the system too (there are a couple listed thru google).

And if you watch the site (get their flyers too) they have them on sale for 1/2 price!

I saw all of those but they all say "f[FONT=arial, sans-serif]or use with clean water only." I already get harbor freight flyer's. I went ahead and said "I don't feel like driving to my local harbor freight or waiting on ordering one so I just bought a penguin 660 submersible power head that puts out 170gph. I'm just waiting for my mounds of pvc cement to cure that I am probably going to have to do over.
