mini canister plans..

I want to hook this filter up to two 5g tanks but I don't know what would be the best way to do it. I came up with these 2 ideas. I think the first one would filter better but I'm not sure.

Out of these 2 ideas which one do you think would work best or would you try something different? I'll let you know that I've never drilled a tank either and its not something I'm looking forward too.

I'm not sure how strong my spray bar is going to be either.. I'm hoping I can get my filter air tight enough to push the water out no problem but I have no idea yet.

Same thing, just with the first one your only drilling one tank. Second one you don't have to worry about overflowing.

Read CHOMPERS sticky on glass drilling.

Whe you try to do multiple tanks you always run into balancing problems, maybe putting one tank above the other and using an overflow http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15733
to feed the second tank.

You do realize that two sponge filter and an air pump would have worked well too :D.

yeah I do realize that, and I have like 3 extra sponge filters lying around too I just wanted to give a shot at making a small filter so when I want to make a big one I'll have a better idea of what I am doing.

I already planned on putting one tank above another and using a overflow can't you tell from my picture? It won't overflow because I am going to put the overflow on it really high up.

I just got it all put together and have been testing it in a bucket in the wash tub and the media I had it filled with was restricting it a ton. I took everything out and left 1 scrubbie and its pushing really good now. What kind of low-restriction media could I pack into my pvc canister?

I had a sponge filter tube packed with rocks on both sides and carbon in the middle with 2 green scouring pads on the outside to keep it tight and it was filtering everything out really good but like I said before, it slowed it down a lot.

I realized that, that's why I didn't just shoot it down, besides... it's keeping you off the streets .

The top pic kinda looks like a bigger tank :D.

Nothing much less restictive than a scrubbie. Put a pre-filter and the rest scrubbies. Experiment a little, just keep the pre-filter.

How long is this thing anyway?

If the Bio-load is low, slower isn't a problem since more dwell time is a good thing.

its about 12-14 inches I'd say.

Its emptying a 5g tank in about 2-3minutes with 3 scrubbies in it. What is a good turnover rate? I've read 2-3 times a hour is good. This is probably going to turnover the water 20-30 times a hour. I assume I could fill it with all kinds of ridiculous media and have it still filtering, I just like how fast/strong it is.
