what are these mini lilly pads called because I want to buy some for my fish tank. I think I'm done with the grounded plants in my tank but would love some plants for the top. I want some of these mini lilly pads but don't know what they're called or where to get them. It's winter already here in MN so forget about going to the local pond for me. I think it would be cool to have some duck weeds in my tank was well.

Anyone have some answers to this and if you guys know then give me a link too would ya..... BTW I seached and yahoo'd.

just wait until spring to collect some :) Not sure a lfs is gonna have some lily pads on hand.

i wouldn't recomended it, they'll completly cover the surface of the tank, unless thats what your going for, but since they cover the surface, the ground plants wont be able to get the light they need. Usually people end up having to throw them out or removing large scoops of duckweed weekly, they don't call it a weed for nothing.

Anywho, a lot of fish stores sell duckweed, and a plant I do recomend would be a Banana Plant!!!!!! I have one in my 55 gallon and they are very hardy, they don't need to be in the soil and will often float around with broad leaves, Plus they look really unique.

Good Luck.

You are right about the Duck weed it's a mess. I got some free from my LFS but after a while I decided not to use it because unless you get them completely out of you tank, they'll multiply like a disease.

I do want the mini lilly pads though because I have about 25% of my tank on one side does not have plants at all. That was my plan, to have that opening so I can put the lilly pads there. Also I want this because I keep native game fish (bass, walleye, and bullheads) so this would complete my tank.......well for now.

Gamefishin you need to post some pics of those fish ecspecailly the BULLHEADS,I NEED TO SEE SOME ONE ELSES BULLHEADS NOW! :screwy:

Ok I'll do that tomorrow, the only problem is those suckers hate the light and hide under my little driftwood. I think I can get a shot to give you an Idea though.

Nymphea colorado, N.midnight, and several other types of pygmy water lily are available. 2 would be enough for a 75g tank, there are several sources and they run $20-$30 each, make sure you buy tropicals as hardies tend to die at tank temps. You will need a few inches of air space above the surface for blossoms. I use shallow bowls set in the gravel to plant them in. most pygmy types have pads that reach 4-5" across and 3" blooms.

Lily pads are from plants called water lillies. They come in dwarf varieties, you can find them at plant nurseries in the spring and summer but not now because it's too cold. Most places online won't ship until spring, but if you look hard enough, you may be able to find some online.

Yeah I'm looking hard I'll tell you, I found one site but it's like $15 bucks for 5 pads..... :screwy: is that a good deal or not.... :screwy: :screwy:

3 dollars a pad seems reasonable. Shipping might be the deal killer though. :)
