actually theyre characins, so theyre more like piranhas.

theyre not picky eaters at all. they will eat just about anything you put in the tank. i feed mine pretty much the same diet as all my other fish.

as far as how many, thats up to debate. they do well in a crowded tank, but most people will tell you to stick to the formula of 1"²/gal, however, you can actually do more then that without problems
 
i think a pair of blue rams and some rummy nosed tetras
 
u could do several dwarf puffers, they are full fresh and grow to just about 1 in. and are true snail killers lol
in almost all cases they will only live in species tanks b/c they will kill other fish.
