Hello fellow fish heads and plant enthuiest.

My mom is ill and a plant lover and misses her roses and it's winter in nh here. I have a empty 15 gallon i think. That is 13 and a half long and the same wide, and 21 high. I would like to set it up with a single minature rose bush in it planted in it in a couple of weeks when her and my dad go on a little retreat.

I have no idea what it needs for lighting and if it needs any thing else i'm a fish head no nothing about plants.

Curious if i can just replace the bulb that is in the lighting all ready with some kind of plant bulb. it is a single 8 watt light now that is 11 1/2from end to end and 11 3/4 from end of prongs to prongs.

allso curious if it would work better with the top on with the original light or top of with a new like hang from light but no good way to set it up light that were it is going.

Allso curious of what kind of light cycle it would need and such as hours on hours off.

allso things such as good media to be planted in thanks for you'r reply's and help it's greatly appreciate. Allso if this is the wrong forum sorry i couldn't find just a terrium part of this sit.

Sincerly

Jeffrey allen Braley.

can no one help me out guy's. I would really appreciate the input.

The tank seems too small. Perhaps a large wooden box? An overhead lighting will work better and remove the top. How about metal halide to increase lighting for the plant? They tend to do better with high lighting and keep lighting on for 10-12 hours. As for ferts, if you have rabbits or any other mammals, their poo is great as fertilizers. You can buy fertilizers in garden centers as well. The tank water also works due to possible high nitrate level by the fish wastes. This is better than using tapwater when watering the plants.

Ever though about bonsais?

Firstoff, I've got to say that you're a good son. I think the tank dimensions would be fine for a mini rose bush - we are talking about the ones that are like $5 at grocery stores for Valentine's Day, right? If you've got them, I'd go glass tops to keep moisture in and maintain the greenhouse effect. Of course, keep it somewhere warm. At least 70 is probably ideal. Sunlight would be good in addition to your lamp. You probably want 8-10 hours of light per 24 hour cycle to mimic the spring and summer growing seasons. When it gets later in the year, you can probably just have in in front of a window for sunlight w/o the lamp.

ya pretty much what i mean the little ones at the grocery store. not a full size rose bush. And thanks for the input.

thanks to all that replied. The wood box idea sounds good but not what i am looking for at all. My ma dukes has got lots of plants around the house. I want the mini rose is the glass tank with a light. Not looking to spend hundreds on metal halides good idea and thanks to you for you'r input Lupin. I just want a simple tank with a single mini rose and a simple light fixture that get's the job done if possible to just replace the bulb in the light that i have all ready got. Any bulbs possible for what i previously described. Thanks agian every one.

Sincerely

How about daisies? They're not as big as the rose and just as pretty to look at.

Bonsai trees stay small, but yes, they are Japanese.
