I know nothing about Angel fish other than the fact that they are cichlids. I was wondering if there was such a thing as mini or dwarf angels?

Never heard of dwarf angels. However, it's usual to see veil angels with much smaller body sizes then standard angels. Possibly due to their physiology putting so much effort and resources towards growing the larger finnage.

There is a species known as the "dumpy" angel becuase it's finage is not as elongate as the normal or altum angels, but the body size isn't much smaller than a typical angel. I could see someone marketing them as dwarf angels though.

I never heard of a dwarf Angel Fish and I hope no one ever devlopes one. A big beautyful natural Angel Fish is one of the most beautyful sights in fishkeeping. I hope there is never a market for intentionaly stunted fish, but unfortunatly they'll get around to it one day I'm sure.

I hope there is never a market for intentionaly stunted fish,
Dwarfism is a lot different than stunting. Also, consider how many Oscars die slow, miserable deaths or lives in 30gal tanks. I imagine a dwarf Oscar like the parrot oscar could fill the niche nicely without outgrowing the tank. Just a thought. But angelfish are so small already, why would you need smaller?

I hear what you're saying and yes, I understand the differance between stunting and dwarfisum I was using the term in the generic sense. I just don't go for that stuff, and I don't think it will stop some yoyo from putting a Pacu in a 30 gal, sad but true unfortunatly. I am a realest and understand if some one develops one people will line up to by them. It is what it is.

Dwarf angels are a common or market name given to Pterophyllum leopoldi as they are relatively smaller than common scalare and altums due to the shorter fins.

They are a bit more aggressive than scalare but once acclimatized they are very hardy.

Here are threads on mine:
Mixed angel tank. Leopoldi's are the 4th, 6th and 8th down and then in some of the mixed shots. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292259&highlight=angel

When they were in their own tank. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285788&highlight=angel

The "dwarf" designation comes from their finnage which is not as long or elegant as the other two described species. It also grows back more giving the Leopoldi a more elongated look than the other two. Other synonyms for the Dwarf angel and dumpy angels, long-nosed angels, teardrop angels, Roman nosed angels, and Leopold's angelfish.

Dwarf angelfish being the most common name I have encountered.
