what is the minimum glass thickness do you recommend?

i saw in other thread that a 400gal aquarium bursted because the glass was not thick enough to whitstand the pressure.. i dont want it to happens to me lol
 
I got a quote for that size tank a few weeks ago from nd aquatics, they was using 10 mm glass with a double base
 
I don't understand what you mean by effective height. Are you really building a 60 cm tall tank and intentionally planning to keep the water level at 50 cm?

If it's 50 cm tall, 9 mm glass will work. But if someone fills it to the top (which can easily be done), 9 mm will be unsafe. And you will have to take a chance that no one will buy a tank with intentionally thin glass and also accept that at 9 mm, the tank is purpose-built to be handicapped.

Having said that, I suppose if the price difference between 10 mm and 12 mm is huge, and I was certain of my future needs, 10 mm might be my choice. But still I'd probably buy a 210 gallon, not a thin walled 250.
 
I had a 72x30x28" built and he used 12mm. It has top and bottom 4" euro-brace and four 4" cross braces. I share all this, as now having 12mm, I'd hesitate to do any less.. I'm typically fact based and we talked about safety factors before building, but still paranoid at times.
 
Marineland makes a 265g (US gallons) tank that is 213cm x 61cm x 76cm.

They use 19mm glass for the bottom panel and 12mm everywhere else.

I'd probably go with the same thickness if I was going to DIY it out of glass.
