Minimum Shark Tank Height. . . .

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd do at least 18" - but my wobby NEVER leaves the bottom of the tank. Anywhere between 18 and 30" would probably be ideal (any taller and it gets hard to clean - trust me on that one - mine is 4' tall).

Mine is 2.5 ft tall and I can still reach the bottom, I wouldn't want to go much deeper than 3 ft for me. My bamboo and coral cats hardly ever get above the 18 inch mark. I think deep tanks look awesome, but maintaining them looks to be no fun though.

30" seems to be ideal for cleaning and looks but it all depends, is this on a stand, on the floor, what's the root of this question? ie is this for the next upgrade?

I'd go 3 feet if I had to toss out a number. The other thing to consider is going the depth of the adult length of the longest animal in the tank. This allows for verticle movement/turning if the animal wants to.

Minimum depth is a bit dicey - in that it all depend on which species you dealing with.

Zoodiver's guideline is certainly ideal for most sharks. And I would say it's such be a requirement when keeping active swimming sharks such as Smoothhounds, Carcharhinids and Hammerheads.

However benthic sharks are a bit different. As most benthic sharks rarely go more than a few feet from tin the wild, even when they are in water that is more than 33 feet(10 meters) deep.

The absolute bare minimum tank depth - I would consider for any benthic shark would be about 18" . Even then that would only be for those species which are native to tidal pools - such as Coral Catsharks, & Epaulettes.

For bamboos and small wobbegongs - the minimum depth should be 24".

For adult Heterodontids(Horn sharks), I would go with at least 30-36" depth. As horn sharks - tend to of a stockier build and they tend to be a bit more active.

For an adult Nurse Shark - at least 4 feet deep - although depth of 6 ft or more would be ideal. These are massive sharks for a private aquarist - and really require a tank/pond fit for a small to medium-sized(4-6') requiem shark.

i have a 500 gallon saltwater tank with two baby nurse shark i will be getting a new tank in a week but the tank is 10foot long and 3foot high

And yes this is for the new upgrade coming up. If it was only 18" high i could add another foot on the length and another two feet for width and come out the same price as opposed to it being taller.

11x5x18"
OR
9x3x24"

Could adding length and width justify the height? I am just number crunching with a few different things. I want to do a glass tank, but if i need the height its going to be fiber glass... at least thats what its looking like.

These are not the actual demenions for the tank yet, just easier numbers to work with. Yield will form the tank dimensions for sure
