Minimum size for oscar, gt, and jd?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 3 oscars and 2 gt's in a 125gallon with no problems whatsoever between the o's and the gt's the biggest o is 8.5inches and the other two are around 7inches and the two gt's are a little over 6.5inches. oh and there's a 5inch jag that rules that tank with all the much larger tankmates

What do you base your logic on? none of these fish are too territorial. I have an oscar, JD, severum, small geophagus, and a couple catfish in a 90g and it works great. All fish are big and they all get along.

the amount of bioload

IMO you could get away with a 75g or a 90g for 1x oscar 1x jd 1x gt the 75g is plenty

My 75 was like this

Oscar
JD
GT
Severum

Only problem was green terror was too passive and would hide all the time. Severum was the same size and he's always out and about. I say 75 minimum if they are small when you stock them, but if you stocked it with absolutely full grown I would say a 90.

If you want a red devil I would say a 125-150 minimum depending on how you decorate the tank.

If you get a good filter (Canister preferably) and do 35% once weekly water changes, the O, JD, and GT will be just fine in a 90 or even 75 gallon. How do I know? Because I have done it for long periods of time.

exactly!

I have a 90- gal

It's no fun to see fish getting picked on. My O chased my GT around relentlessly. Tried to kill him a few times a day (but didn't catch) intimidated the GT for food and then sudenly the GT struck back biting off a large chuunck of my O's dorsal fin. Wasn't fun to watch stressful to have a violent tank in your living room.

So it was teritory. There is also an eventual bioload concern. I have a 90 now with 5 sds and I think it looks like too many fisah for that sized tank.
