I only have one adult male red devil right now but I would like to eventually get him a mate. Just want to get some input on how large a tank Im going to need to have a happy pair of adults that will hopefully breed. I know bigger is better, Im thinking around the 200 galon range?......

Currently my pair are in a 75g. They are going on 4 years old, the male is 11-12" and the female is 8-9".

Edit: This may not be typical for all RDs as mine are a very well bonded pair. Also if you get some rd/midas mix they may get larger then what my pair is.

the bigger the better but if your going cheap then a 90 would be bare minimum i would say. if bderick is doing it in a 75 then im sure thats good.

I'd go with a 125 or so. A 200 would be great though!

Agreed, also give the female spots where only she can fit to get away from the male at times of agression. I use deca pots in my tanks and have a few with the bottom cut out just enough so she can get in. keeps agression down and no deaths through all my years of Amphilophus keeping for the past 10yrs.

Interesting. How much smaller is an adult female RD than a male?

if you are adding a female in with an already adult male i would suggest that you make sure it is a 6 foot tank (125 gallon) and not a 4 to give her more room to stay away from him. i would also throw some dithers in to try to give the male something to pick on besides her and to fill some of the open space of the 6' tank.
