You can keep one pretty easily in a 40 breeder at the absolute minimum. Downside is that it requires more water changes in order to maintain quality unless you're running a 20-30 gallon sump with it.

Couple of questions sorry about red devils. What is the minimal tank size for a Red Devil? How big do they get? And what are good tankmates?
55G by itself, the devils can get 15" if a Male 10" for female, good tank mates would be an oscar, jaguar, Texas, and other aggressive Cichlids. I have my 6" devil and 11" oscar in a 125G with other smaller fish like a red zebra.
