Agreed, anyone who has owned a 14inch cichlid will know an 18inch wide tank it too small as far as swimming space. I put my old 14" butti in my 100g for a few day temporarily and it looked ridiculous. A lone 14 inch fish should be the same size tank as for keeping 3-4 fish at that size, it shouldn't be about whether you can manage the nitrates, it should be about what looks right. My old butti used every inch of my dd 300g.
Finally the wieght of a fish increase exponentially with each extra inch, a 14 inch oscar weighs close to twice that of an 11 inch oscar, so if your oscar ever gets close to 14inch your in trouble with a 75g. I would bet alot of members havent seem a properly measured 14 inch tall bodied cichlid in a 75.
+1 FOR 150-180G FOR A LONE 14" OSCAR.

If it were morally ok public aquaria would have rows of 75g tanks displaying 14inch cichlids. 75g can just about take a 10inch oscar IMHO.

I had two and a gibby in a 4x2x2 for years with good water changes i never had a problem.
Saying that for one i still wouldnt go under a 100 gallon for a single oscar. They are big messy and playful. You need alot of oxygen in the water so a big surface area is needed for such a big chunky fish.

I own plenty of 14 inch fish, a few are wet pets in a 75. And I think an 18 inch wide tank is fine.

And really? A 14 inch Oscar weighs almost twice as much as an 11 inch? That's a new one.
