Minimum tank size for cons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so before i knew anything about cons, i had a 3 gallon tank at work, I tossed in 2 cons and had fry.. Right now I have 2 in a 16g with 13 fry 1 month old and 200+ fry 1-2 weeks old.

Soon they will be housed in a 85g palace!

ahhhhh the problem with breeding!!

Well you need grow out tanks, I learned the other night that my fry 1 month old will eat fry 2 weeks old HAHAHAH!! My wife was pissed, and to date i think it was one of the coolest fish related items I have seen.

So my setup will be like this.

85g for parents,
16g for fry
55g for growout.

Im assuming ill have to toss a 20 in the mix or something IF i still want to breed these convicts, but im leaning to JD's

I'd use at least a 20 long, although smaller might work considering how small they can breed at...but considering the adult size, bigger is better, there are some decent sized male cons on here for example

i jsut have a quesion. how many cons could i put into a 5.5 gallon until i move them into a 20 gallon long in the spring in like 3 months i have a bud that can give e some baby fish so couldi put some into teh 5.5 as a growout?

2 cons for breeding would work, if they are small. My cons are small and breed alot. In a 5.5 its kinda cramped and not cool for their space but will work.

Isnt that where your betta lives? IMO not good combo between baby convicts and male betta, they will kill your betta in seconds. And isnt your 20gal already stocked? A breeding pair will kill all of your fish in same 20gal. Then after their 7 to 15th batch you will have hard time to rehome all of convict fry and even your bud will have to deal with one of his own problem with too many convicts. Do you realized that convicts are highly aggressive and breeding madly? research on it.

So for your question, what about none?

ok the fish in the 20 gallon will go into my 281 gallon pond this spring in a few months, the betta as of right onw is still in his 1 gallon tank so the only thing in hte tank right now is a goldfish used to cycle the aquarium which will be a feeder to my sunfish and that last thing u said was just plain uneeded because it would be a growout
