I absolutely love these fish and want to own one some day. What would be sufficient for a lone armatus? I dont want to put him in a semi comfortable tank I want him to be able to stretch his fins nicely. Any suggestions? I love these fish :headbang2

there are few people trying it in a 300. But i would think a 500 would fit better. And eventually only a pond would do for a 4' fish.

300? FAIL
450? FAIL (Trev said his was too small)
750? FAIL (this is my opinion being the owner of a 750)

Opinions are like A-holes..... Everyones got one.

MY opinion is 6 foot deep minimum.

All boils down to if you are a Monster Fish KEEPER OR Monster Fish HAVER- (and will be listing it in the classifieds in the very near future given thier rediculous growthrate)

Really 6 foot deep? Why? The biggest i've seen in the hobby (captivity) is like 30'' range. How long In you opinion does the tank need to be? 50 foot? I know they need a longer tank than deep? Correct? Not saying your wrong just wondering how you come to this idea?

Wow im glad I asked ! I don't see anything bigger than a 750 in my future. Unless I do a 1500 build which is very possible.

my 4 x 8 would be the min in my opinion. he will last a fairly long time in this size, but mine isnt very comfortable anymore. i feel rely bad that he has no room to swim around.

my next tank for him will be a 6 x 10 or 6 x 12

50 long? Sure that would be nice..... BUT in reality.... 10 or 12.

Exactly what Trev said.

I don't understand why people keep questioning tank size when the people that have or have had these fish give advice.....

They are a very powerfull, explosive, territorial fish that is NOT very flexible. They are delicate, it is easy for them to do damage by smashing into things. Put all these things together and it's a recipe for disaster without adequate room.

I feel ya. I was just curious I was reading about them they seem awesome but I doubt I can afford to be in that club for a while. I am setting aside 500 a month for a monster tank (I am building stand and sump) But to get a 6X10-6X12 it may take a lot of saving lol

500 a month for how many months?:naughty:

actually the initial cost of the tank isnt whats gonna break u. the worry will be your water and electric bill.

You could build one cheap.... Easily. Keep it 2.5 high and will easily go through the average door. 6 by 12 should do it.

You could get one now and a 300 would work for a year, hell with carefull ffeeding a 180 may last a year.... If you're saving $500 a month it's palace would be finished before it needed it.

Check out Rich's (VLDesign) build.... He built a friggin shweeeet tank and even went with a few high dollar options and you could build the same tank in a lil over half a year at the rate you're saving......

Don't feel like it can't be done or that I'm trying to imply it's a bad idea... It's just that I feel I made some mistakes with them and it's due to crap info and stereotypes that are floating around. I feel people are misinformed. It's NOT that it's a bad idea to commit to them.... hell IMO they are THE baddest FW fish in existance, but caring for one is a HUGE undertaking that often goes underestimated. They have growth rates that are unmatched by almost any fish I know of and most people start them in small tanks and always fall short of upgrades or don't think about how tough they are to move from tank to tank.

I hope you DO end up doing it!!! They are a VERY impressive fish. I know I will own one again soon..... As they are almost in season........

People just need to realize these are the RTCs of the Characin world and be prepared for that so we can have SUCCESSFULL Armatus keepers and not Armatus havers, cause these fish can't exactly be moved or shipped easily like the ol RTCs can. They are MUCH more fragile.

In short DO IT! BUT be responsable about it, OR you'll end up like me with Armatus outnumbering any other fish in my freezer. :(
