50 long? Sure that would be nice..... BUT in reality.... 10 or 12.

Exactly what Trev said.

I don't understand why people keep questioning tank size when the people that have or have had these fish give advice.....

They are a very powerfull, explosive, territorial fish that is NOT very flexible. They are delicate, it is easy for them to do damage by smashing into things. Put all these things together and it's a recipe for disaster without adequate room.

Understand, I've kept them and agree they need a large tank. But six foot deep is a little excessive! JMO, 10-12 long and six foot deep? huh Really?
750 Gallons is fine for this fish for life. IMO, I had a 20'' in a 600 with no ill affect's. 750 is about right imo. Gl with your fish bro's!

everyone has an opinion.
i personally would say 8x4 is good enough for life.
but doesnt mean its right....
minimum to keep em happy i'd say is 10x6 as well...

wide.
i think DB meant wide too.:D

I agree, Wide is something you must have. ;)

Depth is not near as important imo.

I personally would think that something long and narrow would work. I have not yet had the chace to own one but I will someday and If I had nothing else with it I would do a 10x3x2.5. It will never get over 3' long and at 10' long tank it will give it plenty of running room. but that's just the input of someone who has not owned one.

If the fish was by it's self? That's something i have no clue? I would think you would have a better chance of pulling it off in a smaller tank kept alone. Because there's nothing to spook them or chase ect.... But i'd honestly want nothing less the four foot wide long term. But who know's? lol

Maybe we are off on terms here.....

When I say 6 deep I mean wide.... Looking at the tank it would be 6 deep (front to back) 12 by 6 footprint 2.5-4 high.

As far as actual waterdepth I think 2.5 is enough but the more the better.....

And to the statement that they don't get 3 foot...... I raise the BS flag. Plenty of pics on the net of 3 footers. But they sure as hell didn't get to that size in tanks they can't turn around in. They are NOT an Aro. They aren't flexible.

4 wide might work but I wouldn't expect it to grow to the same size as one in a 6 footer. They need room to turn around....... No room = stunted.

J what happened to your 20 incher?

Show me 3' in captivity and I'll take back what I said but the largest I have seen pics of is 30"

Wu chun has two large ones but neither in these pics are bigger then his 27" GATF

And this one from Seichii measures 30"

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176653

fishbase has them at 66cm and that's about 25" and I know that is far smallers the acctual size look at the pic in the link but still not over 3'

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=57050

Hell this site lists scombs as max of 4' but not armatus only 2+

So please show me a 3' armatus in a home aquarium and I'll retract any comments about there min. tank size. but it must have a measurement with it not just a big of a big fish ;)
