I think people don't intially understand that this fish just in general or because it's a characin need such a large tank to compensate for it's special behaviours(smashing into things). I think most who have interest in this fish/want to keep one just aren't considering normal characin behaviour packaged with a large fish when wanting to keep this fish thus why the question tank size. I would agree with you though that it needs special considerations.

Vamptrev how big is yours now?

mine is about 22 inches now.

Wu chun has two large ones but neither in these pics are bigger then his 27" GATF

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155866

And this one from Seichii measures 30"

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176653

fishbase has them at 66cm and that's about 25" and I know that is far smallers the acctual size look at the pic in the link but still not over 3'

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=57050

Hell this site lists scombs as max of 4' but not armatus only 2+

http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/characins/Payara.php

So please show me a 3' armatus in a home aquarium and I'll retract any comments about there min. tank size. but it must have a measurement with it not just a big of a big fish ;)

these r the biggest ones ive seen. still 2 to 2 1/2 feet r pretty big.

mine is starting to look like a big goldfish in a little fish bowl.

I have no problem whatsoever with 30" but 36" seems steep. Not unlikly but very uncommon. i would just like to see a confirmed 3'er in a home aquarium that was grown out in the home not brought in from the wild at a large size.

I guess it's like a 26" GG not common at all but I've seen one in person.

IMO,the only only reason we dont see 3 feet in the aquarium is because they are very new to the hobby.
who here can honestly say theyve had for for 10 years?
also,we've never seen big ones in captivity because no one is able to give them the care they need to get that big.
still,30" is only 6" of 3 feet.

Maybe we are off on terms here.....

When I say 6 deep I mean wide.... Looking at the tank it would be 6 deep (front to back) 12 by 6 footprint 2.5-4 high.

As far as actual waterdepth I think 2.5 is enough but the more the better.....

And to the statement that they don't get 3 foot...... I raise the BS flag. Plenty of pics on the net of 3 footers. But they sure as hell didn't get to that size in tanks they can't turn around in. They are NOT an Aro. They aren't flexible.

4 wide might work but I wouldn't expect it to grow to the same size as one in a 6 footer. They need room to turn around....... No room = stunted.

J what happened to your 20 incher?

He was lost when a heater was snapped in the 600. Lost about 6K worth of fish. In one shot. And yes we were of term's alot. lol I'm just trying to learn as much as possible. I'll be buying more aswell! :)

Man im really sorry to hear about that.... All due to a heater damn :screwy::( I have had two go bad and luckily I caught them before it got too serious.

I've learned A LOT in the last month about Characins.

Armatus top out at 30 inches and Odoes at 12.....

Same friggin arguement again. Give the friggin fish some room and who knows what will happen.

:wall::lipsseale

The way fish measurements work isn't a 30 inch fish next to a tape really a 4 footer?

Anybody read the feeding regimen of the 30 inch Armatus? Makes you wonder what would happen if it was fed in a big tank.

Take a big whiff...... Smells like inspiration around here lately. :headbang2

Okay Odoe expert show me a pic of an Odoe in captivity over 12 inches or even close to what they get in the wild-You rant and rave about something you don't even know about-could you please post a pic of your Odoes?
BTW-I am just stating what I feel that is what I do-I am not around the bush I just call it like it is! LOL!!

that's true but there are not huge ones in the home aquarium. Most fish simply will not reach there full growth potential in the home. so pics of huge armatus in the wild is not what we could see in the home.

I'm wanting to see one that's over 30" in the home aquarium that was grown out there.
