The way that the question is framed, I'd say at least 10,000 gal. One must think that the fish can and likely will reach 4' and ~100 lbs.

A 10000 gallon tank is blowing it way out of proportion. A 1000 gallon tank is large enough for a single red tail cat given the right dimensions. Which should be very wide and long but not very deep. How many 100lb red tail cats have you seen? I would expect no more than 40 lbs in a home aquarium

i'm taking tbtb's side on this. it is not minimum tank size, but a tank that is very suitable for the fish. now 1kG is the known minimum, but for the best for the catfish you'd be looking at a few thousand gallons. plus there are known red tails to exceed 4' in aquatia. TL's rtc is a good example.

1000 gallons wont be enough. If you're expecting nothing more than 40 lbs in a home aquarium, then your expectations are sadly very low for one of the giants of the Amazon. I honestly think no common commercially sold aquarium is big enough to house these cats.

Also, remember that these fish tend to stay on the deeper areas as they grow. A very shallow water level would provide a very sub-par environment for the animal. Footprint is not always everything.

Try living under a roof thats just 2 inches above your head for your entire life, thats how it'll be for the fish. Hence, NOT large enough.

Us providing artificial habitats for these fishes are bad enough for them as it is, the least we could do is avoid something we dont have at least the knowledge to take care of.
