Minimum water change requirements

In my 29 gal. reef I do 10% weekly to help suplement the corals with the nutrients in the salt (Reef Crystals) Increasing you water changes may solve the problem, or it may not. First you must find the root of the problem. How old are you halides? Bulbs over a year old start to drop in color temprature and will encourage algea growth. If you bulds are over a year old I would suggest changing all of them. (the metal halides and the flourecent) What level are your nitrates at? High nitrates can cause algea growth. Any thing over 15 ppm nitrates is generaly considered too high for a reef. Do you use tap water or RO/DI water. If you are using tap water the most likely cause is high phosphates (anything over .03 ppm) Get a phosphate test kit and test both you tank and you tap water. Or bring both you tank and tap water to a LFS and ask them to test it.

If you problem is phosphantes the best way to get rid of them is to swich to RO or RO/DI water, and use some type of filter media. I use a fluidized phosphate reactor from Kent (although I like the TWO LITTLE FISHIES reactor better) with ROWAphos, along with RO/DI water it keeps my phosphates at .03 ppm.
