New to arowanas, but just acquired a 125g 72x18x23 and probably will not be going any bigger (will be moving quite frequently in the near future) Would that be able to hold an arowana for about 2 years until I move.

I was just going to make the 125 an upgrade for my piranha shoal but now thinking maybe arowana. And what suitable tank mates have you all found. Not a fan of dats and not sure If im a fan of pbass also not sure if the pbass will easily out grow the 125. Would a pair of jags be able to accompony the arowana or am I pushing it.

Also on a side note would a ray or two be able to live in this tank for about two or three years??

I think 125 would be good for him alone, but to be prank, it's not enough, maybe you would need to upgrade to 200 or so for him to grow to his fullest, but why buy arowana if you're planning to give/sell it in the near future?

I know alot of people who keep them in this configuration. Two years should be fine ...though some might argue not comfortable for the aro.

Tank mates? I would go for bichir ... rays can get big and apparently waste factories too ...

Well Im a junior/sophmore right now in college and am doing rotc so when I graduate I will be moving to an unseen destination right now. A 125 is probably the biggest I can go right now and probably with the frequent moves the biggest I can go for a long time. I got sucked into this hobby very recently and very fast. I know that in about two years all my fish will have to be given/sold off, but in order to continue with this hobby I have to deal with it. Not sure If I want to designate the 125 for a solo fish, so Ill probably just end up increasing my shaol of piranahs and move them to the 125 instead.

Ya i wasn't sure if he would be cramped or not. To me 125 is huge but to the rest of you guys with your 300g tanks mine is dinky .

No. 125g is actually quite a big tank. IMO a bit to big for a 4-5" aro actually... tough for small aro to catch/find food. Especially if it is moving type (feeder). I had two silvers and a jar with two separators.

One year would be way OK ... once your silver start hitting 20" then it will have more difficulties turning ... though i must say, silvers are quite flexible ...still, like i said before people have different opinions of what constitutes comfortable. I have seen massive silvers kept in 125g for life ...for many years (people will say on MFK that it is a hell for it ... look docile and healthy ...just not very active).

ALl that said, i find my silvers in large tank to be quite annoying sometimes ...way too skittish ...tooo much space to swim? lol

I have seen very large Arowana's (28"+) in a 75 gallon tank before. Not good for the fish but can be done. The most important part of the tank is the foot print. The arowana will need the length to swim and the width to turn around.

72x18 So I guess like the ctoy said once it gets close to 20 Ill have some problems.

How long does it take to get to that size? Will I have to worry about it hitting 20 anytime in the next two years?

And what are all your thoughts on arrows, they worth the tank space?

20 inches would be about 1.5 years.

Even when it is 20" it will be OK imo, but beyond that it becomes arguable (not to locals here though ^^)

if you get yours at 4" then assume a fastest growth rate of 2" a month that means in eight months you have a 20" monster ... mine was around that rate ... if you take 1" per month growth then 16 months ...

Like i said before you can do 125g for two years and more - just you might get some comments on your tank size (but as long as you have good filtration and aeration + constant water changes you will be fine)
