minnow traps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its funny I have gone there before at night not much yet during the daytime it was a whole different world. Its a "secret" out of the way place behind some businesses.
There are lots huge lakes around here but not to many fish . Someone at work told me fishing regulations mean nothing here and even the tiniest bass is kept which I have seen . Maybe thats why as lots cattails ,other shore plants and water is pristine .

I caught countless mosquito fish -3 tiny bass- 4 sunfish longear. I used hot dogs and bread set the trap out Sun am while fishing put it out about 5 feet deep among cattails.

Trap was only in water for about 4 hours. few turtles showed up to . It was a gold mine. funny thing is I have gone there at night nothing but during day it was full of biting fish.

On hook caught 4 bass (nothing big) 2 big sunfish. let everything go but 12 mosquito fish put them in yards pond 3 that I kept are black/white type.

Before leaving to give my thanks lol cut the hot dogs up into tiny pieces and threw them in the lake with bread . This way "no hard feelings" with the fish lol however I was after cichlids but none to be found
sounds like a good day.
leave it in longer and see what ya get.
each try you should get something different.
also look into a shrimp net like i think i mentioned.
that way you dont wait and catch more.
;)

lol what I should have said was that few abide by fishing regulations around here infact I would think most dont have fishing licenses at all .
I have actually seen several small bass in bucket 4/5 inches being kept to cook . I doubt many if any have fishing licenses around here (Doral) .
I can see going to Glades,Ocochobee lake few other places Fish "warden' asking for fishing license but not around the Doral lakes.
I am sure you have gone many times by Miamis piers and beach . You know many if not most dont have licenses and keep whatever they catch .

Miami is not like N.florida its a more "laid back" type of thinking when it comes to regulations . THats what I should have said. I have my license for fresh/salt and just sent in for my hunting license because I would like to collect a scarlet king .
only thing in my yard are ringnecks ,garters and rarely catch a glimpse of them

I think the key was going when it was light not the off hours I usually go like pre work or after work thiis was about 9 am to about 1pm (major sunburn) . It was a fish jackpot .
First time ever that even saw mosquito fish and zillions of them. The ones I kept added to my pond are eating machines . I think they eat more flake food than my platys .
I am going to wait a month till sunfish breeding season is over to go back as dont want to catch any while they protect their nests . Even saw some big fish jump but no idea what type fish thought maybe carp?

I just looked up freshwater mullet as had no idea what it was and thats it exactly. I have particularly seen them in the canals . They jump against the current

I have gone fishing in the canal using lures with these fish jumping left and right all around the lure which I reel in very slowly but no bite.
I have gone at night maybe thats why . Thanks

Hello
I was looking at minnow traps (mesh type with funnel ). How long do they need to be "set" for? I was planning to use it for couple of hours while I fish as didnt want to leave it overnight . Not sure if that would be enough time.

I imagine bread would be a good bait?

Thanks

or get a casting net. there amazing! there hard to throw but you can catch anythning but jaws!

Lol casting net with me equals I wind up dead . I am like that fumbling Inspector from the Pink Panther series .
It took me about 5 months to get the hang of fishing without major tangles and hooking myself plus I would be afraid to enter a lake or river to get that thing out if it got caught in anything
