i have had a similar experience a few years ago
one time i bought a 1.5 in albino African(don't remember what kind) and i usually don't buy such small fish anyways i always opened the bags by tearing them instead of untieing them and then i let out all the water i can but leave enough so the fish isn't out of the remaining water. so there i am pouring it into my sink when BAM...he makes a break for it and goes down the drain
now I've got the omg look on my face and I'm thinking well with all the water that came out of the bag he just flushed himself but in a last ditch effort i go and get a pipe wrench pull the trap from under the sink and empty it into a bowl and there he is swimming like nothing happened
he lived in one of my tanks for a few years before i traded him off
since this experience I've always emptyed newly bought fish into a bowl and then net them into their new home
