Moderators, delete if this is already on the forum. I could have sworn I asked this somewhere but can't seem to find it here. Anyway, I have seen many sources that say it's okay to mix all male peacocks, some that say it's okay to mix all male or all female mbunas, but nothing that says anything about all male or all female Tanginyikans (especially Julis). Have any of you ever mixed all male or all female Tanginyikans and especially Julis? If so how did it go?

I never saw the need to weed out males or females to end with all one gender...especially Julis. The males and females are both beautiful and they get along well and you get to see the natural behavior.

What if you don't want to breed though? Would the same gender fight?

As small as Juli’s are, and given they’re monomorphic (M&F look the same), even at full size, venting to select 1 gender would be very difficult mate. I doubt you would find anyone even willing to do that for you 🤷🏻‍♂️

IMO vendors that sell sexed fish (except adult 3" or larger/older fish where males are a c) are using deceptive marketing. They have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, and if they get it wrong you are still stuck with the fish...so they refund your purchase price. What about shipping for the replacement? What about taking back the fish? BUT people will buy from them over the competition to get the sexed fish.

Why don't you want them to breed?

If you want to try an experiment, I would get all females. They will still fight over habitat...there is always a hierarchy. You may still have to rehome fish that are rejected before they are killed.

I don't have a place to take fry nor do I have the room to keep them.

In my experience tang peak color and personality comes out with the presence of both male and females. I can understand not having the room/extra tanks to breed and care for fry. If you want to go with julidochromis buy a group of juveniles and slowly remove females overtime. Otherwise you could cull the broods or introduce predators to the tank.

I had Paracyprichromis Nigripinnis breeding non-stop in a peaceful set-up where the fry lived with the parents. I didn't want additional fry and so I introduced a trio of Altolamprologus calvus, they controlled the population in short order.
