I have tried ths setup a while back set the p.h. at 7.5 and everyone seemed healthey but the africans are small and grow slow they where quickly outgrown and eaten by the likes of rd,o,jag,texas.I think if u get your africans medium size and the ca 's small u could enjoy this setup for a year or so till the ca 's got big.
 
i've kept jewels with firemouths and cons in one of my first setups.

i see a lot of tilapia buttis in american tanks
 
Wild caughts will need different parameters so probaly won't work but captive bred will be ok I mixed all types of cichlids from all continants over the years with no problem except normal cichlid aggression.
 
idk. it just seems problematic to me.
