Mixing Africans and Centrals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Generally your best bet would be keeping "community" cichlids from different areas together. The aggressive ones from either areas are hard enough to combine with each other, mixing them together is playing with fire.

My 12 inch male Bifa runs the show. I have added more haps/peacocks with no issues. Bifa breaks up any skirmishes, but none are serious. Firemouth and convict keep to themselves. I agree that the difference of shapes between New World and Africans seems to keep them from being threatened by one another. I also realize this can all go bad at any time. :p

I ve done it before, I've had some with issues and some with no issues. I think a lot just depends on the fish, amount of each fish their sizes and personalaity. You do it with the right fish and it should be fine.

I have a Jack in my tank. He is the only CA in there with the Africans which some of the Zebras are 5'' but he is still the biggest and they don't bother each other at all. I have a CA only tank and was thinking about moving him but he really seems to love the tank he is in, so why fix what is not broken.

I've never had issues mixing haps with various new world cichlids (mostly central), especially if grown up together. I would be hesitant with mbuna and large guapotes.

Thanks for the comments. I re-homed the Bifa to add more haps and peacocks. The salvini and firemouth are still getting along well with the Africans.

I currently have a Frontosa housed with 2 Red devils, a Synspilum,a Dovii and a sunfish.
The Synspilum, Red Devils and Frontosa where all raised together.
In a few weeks the Synspilum, Dovii will go in the 180.

I completely forgot I have a SA in my tank currently LOL. Right now there is a juvenile Jack Dempsey (about 2") in with multiple Mbuna, a 6" Texas, 2 Jewels... You get it haha

Jack Dempseys are actually a CA cicclid.

I have a mix in my 125 gallon. So far, so good. Bifasciatus, convicts, firemouth, electric blue hap, nimbochromis venustus, OB mbuna, clown loaches, giant danios. All cichlids are male. I call it the United Nations tank. All fish are adults and I have no aggression issues at this point. Just wondering if anyone else is trying this approach and would like to know your results. Thanks in advance.
