Water parameters really don't count for much, unless you are talking about wild imports. There are Africans which mix better with CA than other africans. "Haps", like peacocks, Ahli, venustus, etc work better than zebras. Tang. fish like Calvus are very timid, and usually don't mix well, despite being African. I have kept this mix myself, along with some large rainbows and barbs...HOWEVER, there were no pairs of CA cichlids...breeding in the tank would have caused mayhem.

any thoughts on how a kenyi or acei would do?

I agree with SimonL, PH levels are important when dealing with fish from the wild. Fish that have been breed captively adapt very well to any ph. Have you seen an lfs that has fish racks and different types of fish in their tanks in the same rack, and they use one main sump for filtration? Do you think they go to each tank and make sure the ph if fine with each particular fish?

Very true, I see why it would make a big difference for wild caught fish.. I think I might go with the calvus anyways, from what I've read they are more timid then the green terror..

Theres a yellow lab with my oscar.Damn fish went vegan,he wont eat my culls anymore. They get along ok,Id be happier if oscar ate him though.

All lot of people will tell you different water parameters for different fishes. As you can see....i don't listen.

I know this thread is a bit old but I wanted to add my two cents. Personally I hate mixing american and african cichlids and every time I see a tank that does it makes me cringe. Don't get me wrong alot of them look nice, really nice but I don't see what the point is. I have always hated the Idea of a "community" tank IMO a fish tank should stimulate the natural enviornment of the fish kept. Now mixing SA with CA cichlids is cool. Or mixing say frontosas with haps, great. But mixing green terrors with tropheus to me dosen't click. Now there are a million reasons why there will be zero problems and many people do it succefully. But I would never do it. The fish have evolved so differently and deserve to be in thier perspective biotopes. Plus african cichlids and american cichlids tend to speak a different language so to speek and surrender to a red zebra might be different to a jack dempsey which could cause problems.

By no means am I saying you couldn't do it I just wouldn't...

rrcoolj, I understand you not mixing SA/CA and Africans, but when you have captive rasied fish, does biotope really matter? Most these fish don't know they need a certain type of wood a rock to "feel" at home, and yet the still thrieve. Like I said before, I can understand not mixing Wild Caughts, because of the different water parameters and biotopes that they come from.
