I was wondering if it was ok to mix the 2 in a 160 gallon tank with ranging from 15 - 20 african cichlids (peacocks and haps) and 1 pleco!

the bichir im not sure of the name i heard someone call it a spiker??
but at my lfs it cost like 15 bucks and it looks really good maybe 5" it has spikes on the back of it any info will be good i was just wondering if it was possible and what not..??

thanks...

check the forum dood - polypterus.... and i have had them mixed before and they were fine,,,,i mean it depends of what sp. it is also i guess for max size....need more details most likely senegal

I keep mine with a pair of convicts in my 240g and they are fine together. The convicts constantly keep breeding which provides a fresh supply of fry for my bichirs to eat every other month or so. Not sure if 20+ cichlids might be too aggressive though. You also have to make sure that the cichlids dont eat all the food if you have shy bichirs.

try taking pics of the bichir, or go to anne's(beblondie) stickies at the top of the page.

as for tank mates try the third page of the primer---- http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65770

just look around that thread and youll know all that you need to know about the little beasts.

EDIT: almost forgot, the pleco might be a bad idea because they are known to suck the slime coat off of bichirs, which yes, does in fact kill them.

plecos and bichirs dont mix well

if its fifteen bucks its pretty well gotta be a senegalus. A lot of people mix africans with polys it ussually works but I'd be nervous about that arrangement. Polys are pretty tough but thier eyes and extended nostrils could be at risk around aggressive cichlids. Just say no to plecos and polys :)

After seeing that post about an oscar ripping the senegal's face off i would hesitate putting them with anything potentially strong/large. Of course it depends on the size difference.
