It seems to work. I have a senegal in my African grow-out tank. He gets by fine. No one really beats up on it, except that the aceii took a liking to the tip of the bichir's tail for a bit.
They do get out-competed by smarter, faster and keener cichlids, but as Otherone said, just feed the bichir afterwards. Or, alternatively, throw something too big for the cichlids to eat, but big enough for the bichir to swallow in there. All my fish are still young, so I throw a big piece of shrimp in there that the cichlids can't swallow or engulf in one bite. That way, they can trim it down in size a little and the bichir swims up and grabs it like a dog grabs a bone, before swallowing it like a snake. Seems to work...
