Mixing Peacocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is my the results of my hybrid breeding experiment. It was a OB peacock female and a male stuartgranti. I was going for a nice blotchy blue peacock. I dont know if the males will color up as they grow or if this is their color, they are 1 inch juvies.

As some of you know my tank has only been setup for about a month. But I have had success breeding in a heavily stocked Hap/Peacock tank.

Stock List:

1MaleProtomelas taeniolatus
1 Male Cyrtocara moorii
4 1M/3F Nimbochromis livingstonii
2 1M/1F Nimbochromis venustus
4 2M/2F OB Peacock's (1 male is blind)
5 2M/3F Sunshine
1 Male Albino Sunshine
1 Male Dragonblood
1 Male Placidochromis milomo
3 Male Eureka Splits
3 Eye Biters (Keeping 1 Male)
8 Yellow Labs
2 Synodontis Decorus
1 Male Placidochromis electra
1 Male German Red

I think I'm forgetting a peacock or two.

As far as aggression goes, the blind male OB gets picked on by one of the Male Splits. Thats it. 2 of my female livingstonii are holding and 1 of my female sunshines is also holding. My male haps are about 9" and 10" and they get along great. No aggression at all. So far so good.

I have a 300 gallon tank in my office I use as a show tank. Currently I've got a mix of large haps and male peacocks. I've had no aggression problems between the haps and peacocks. I have had aggression problems with some of the haps and have had to remove a couple. I also had aggression problems between some of the male peacocks. My absolutely awesome wc maleri island male was killed by one of my chilumba males(overnight). I do have a couple of female haps in the tank but I had no cross breeding problems so far. No breeding at all yet with the haps. They're all 8" to 9", but none so far. If I see any signs I'll move the pair to a new tank, or seperate them if they're cross breeding. No fry would have a chance in that tank anyway!

I have a 40g long with a about 7 lithobate yellow blaze at 4-5" 1 male and about 6 females in with a trio of Aul. maleri island at 3.5"-4". They get along great but some times the lithobate tries to stop/eat the eggs when the maleri's breed but the maleri always succeeds. At first I put them together temporarily but it worked out so well I kept them together.

I also have a 55g with 6 Ps. Flavus, 6 Ps. Red Top Ndumbi, 3 Borleyi Red Fin, and 4 Hap. sp. 44 Red Top all adults. Its overstocked but they are doing great, they show absolutely no aggression towards each other. But I do plan on taking at least on of the groups out, prolly the 3 Borleyi Red Fin.

My show tank, which is really just left over breeder males all around 5". There is a red empress, a Aul. Mozambque Cobue, Aul. Ngara Flametail, Aul. Maleri Island, and a one eyed Lithobate yellow blaze. They also get along great. I did used to have a second flametail which fought constantly with the other flametail to the point where I had to get rid of one. If I didn't I'm sure one would have ended up dead.

I my experience when you have a all male tank just don't kept two of the same species that look the same or are the same, i.e. a Aul. Benga with a Aul. Maleri Island. and if I am breeding I always put fish that are a different color and far from a different species like a peacock with a hap, to lower the chance of interbreeding.

I have some pics of some of these setups in my fish room post . http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2268809#post2268809

My favorite subject!! All male Haps and peacocks. In the past I had mixed Peacocks together in a 36 inch tank with different females and I wondered why there was so much aggression and why only a few fish would show their color. So finally came a across the concept of an all male tank and I havent looked back since. I bought lots of fish as juvies not showing color and as they did I would put the females in another tank. I also bought a few larger fish along the way from fish clubs, craigslist, and LFS. I knew I wanted lots of color and personality so I researched fish that were peaceful and colorful. I also started to read about having a wide 6FT tank is best with these fish so I sold my 75G I grew them out in and got me a 100G 6FT tank and what a difference the extra 2 feet made!!! There is still a little chasing but the fish getting chased can actually get away. It also greatly reduced the nipped fins.

I had an all male show tank with lemon jakes, sunshines and eureka reds 1 male of each I had 3 total. All showed color and did great, I fed them frozen foods and pellets. The tank set up had sand, a few rocks and tree looking thing with holes for hiding. I later added 1 female of each and wanted to breed (not with intensions or purpose of selling - just to breed) Each paired off did great and seemed to go well - however I did find that my lemon jake male and my sunshine female did breed and had babys - I wont lie they were beautiful babies but only one neded up survivng and I kept him for a 3 years before he ended up dying for unknown reasons. I'll post up pictures tonight or monday.
