Mixing PFS And Aragonite

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have mixed aragonite with PFS many times, but I never bothered layering.
Sometimes if your water is soft, in gets milky for a for few days, until pH and alkaliiinity. hits equilibrium

It would happen when I´d add new a few tbsps of aragonite to my fluidized bed reactor too.

Or when mixing PFS with aragonite

Thx duanes duanes

I'll be running arogonite and crushed coral in hobs for the new 210. Just didn't know if there was any benefits mixed with PFS in case it sunk underneath the PFS from fish sifting and would it loose its buffering capability if it got buried.
I have 150 lbs of PFS and was thinking adding 50lbs of Aragonite to the PFS.

Mixing it in substrate can help buffer alkalinity, but if it is already in filters that may be redundant.
And if you notice alkalinity falling, it may be used up, and more needs to be added.
The pH of my water at the time, was 7.6, and I was trying to raise it to above 8.
To do this, I found adding a few TBPS to the fluidized reactor every couple months was needed.

I did an experiment of Aragonite in my HOBs to house central american cichlids. Due to having soft water with a pH 7.2, 2lbs in a hob attached to a 75 gallon tank raised to 7.8 with a TDS of 150ppm which is the minimum.
In one of my 125s, I have Aragonite mixed with small grains of substrate and 2lbs in a filter at the same readings.

Being this is a 210 gallon, I'm gonna place 2lbs in each of the two HOBs I have and use two other canisters for actual filtration. Worse case scenario I can add Aragonite to substrate.

During water changes on other tanks with Aragonite, water parameters are back into place at 7.8 ph within less than an hour.

I started doing this to move away from buffers with unrealistic parameter results.
