Mixing Tetras

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Id have to get gravel or some substrate for live plants, its bare bottom right now. I like the neon tetras, their bright and fast so my son would propably love watching them zip around the tank. I do have plenty of tall fake plants in there right now as well as two driftwood peices and a little rock structure thing so im not sure if I really need real plants or substrate yet.

Ill post a pic of the tank tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Any anubius or sword would do fine attached to that driftwood, no substrate necessary, and they eat ammonia. Either way, thanks for starting this thread because the gears are turning for starting something in my 5 year old's room.

I current have a 30 gallon with red phantom tetras, glowlight tetras and neon tetras with some angels doing just great

Just stay away from the fin nipper types and you should be fine. Buenos Aires tetras can be somewhat nippy, as can black skirt tetras. Usually if you keep them in groups of 5 or more, the nipping/bullying is kept to a minimum, and this isn't an issue anyways. Good luck!

I got him 6 Black Phantom Tetras, and 4 Blue Mickey Mouse Platy's (on sale). My lfs was all out of ghost shrimp (should get some in tomorrow). I just need 1 or 2 more tall fake plants and a nice live plant (maybe a floating plant for cover), and I would like to add 6 Neon Tetras just to help as small fillers. Does that seem over stocked for a 20gal? I can always leave out the Neon Tetras, but all the fish in there right now are still really small, so they have enough room for now until everyone grows a bit. There is also a Lionhead Goldfish we call "Fat@$$" as he never stops eating lol

I dont want to post a pic yet until im totally done with this tank, a little more decor (real or fake plants - already have driftwood), and possibly some kind of substrate (bare bottom right now).

Should be OK with the neons in there. My wife has a 20 gal tank with 20 neons in it that's been up and running for a year and a half without a single loss or issue. Doesn't sound like it'd be overstocked with what you have listed, just wouldn't add any more than that. Be sure to post pics once its all set up!

I plan on removing the goldfish once hes bigger, hes the biggest fish in there at about 3", but I dont plan on adding anymore then what I mentioned above ^. The tank looks good so far, it just seem bare from mid-level up and still looks empty from small fish lol. But so far my son loves looking at it, hopfuly he'll want to get into the hobby like daddy.
