Mixing Victorians..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This would be a 50/50 shot. The females do look different enough that the male should have no problem telling the difference, but that doesn't mean they won't inter-breed.

ok.. are the females colorful at all with the python island? I know that the zebras will be yellow, thats kinda why i wanted a colony of them.. both sexes are colorful

My python island females were gray/silver all the time. I had the silver variant of the ZO, so my females were silver with black stripes. But that is the issue with a lot of Vics, the females aren't very colorful.

Check out the Haplochromis (Paralabidochromis) sp kribensis. There is a yellow female variant of these as well.

If they did inter breed the fry wouldn't survive... if it did you'd be very lucky... Astatotilapia and Pundamilia... Since there genus isn't the same it would be very unlikely that they would interbreed

It doesn't really work like that for rift lake species. All of the cichlids in that lake evolved from only a few species. They are all closely related and very similar. Lake malawi species will cross breed with several different genuses and they still produce healthy fry that are able to breed. One of the most common crosses out there is yellow lab(Labidochromis Caeruleus) and red zebras(Metriaclima estherae). And believe me, those hybrids are fertile.
There is a risk for hybrids when mixing Victorians which is highly undesired since so many of those species are endangered of extinct in the wild. I personally would not risk it and would keep species only set ups.

Thanks for the info.. I am planning on keeping a species tank with the zebra Oblques.. Might try a planted tank..? Havnt decided yet....
