Even though that RTC appears to be in a fairly small tank he looks to be in great condition and the h2o looks nice and clean...kudos to this guy to at least put in the work to maintain a suitable home...hopefully he upgrades soon.

Kind of sad for the rat...its cruel to feed that live...and it probably isnt the best for his fish either. Frozen would be a better idea all around.

I dont think that eating a rat will harm him at all. Unless it was poisoned, or caught in his throat, there shouldnt be an issue.

If he is still trying to eat, that is always a good sign.

no we dont use poison and we are out in the country so fingers crossed, still looks fine and was trying to steal food from other fish a short while ago
I don't think it's just rat poison you have to be worried about. If it ate anything harmfull like fertilizer, weed killer, any type of pesticides really. That's why I never recomend feeding wild caught rodents to anything. Better safe than sorry.
In your case you had no control over the situation, and I hope everything is well. Sounds like a descent sized rtc. How big is he?

how big is the tank?

that a nice fat RTC lol =0

Wonder if Hikari are going to bring out new "rat sinking pellets"

Seriuolsy though, no problem at all.
Whenever my small python doesn't eat one of his defrosted small rats or mice rather than bining it or re-freezing it it goes straight in the pond for one of the big Cats.
Happens all the time in the wild with any dead or probably even live for that matter rodent, bird, lizard etc that's washed or fallen into the river.
