I broke 2 because the water level was lower because I was still changing water. Those were my fault.
1 was because the fishes bang the heater against the glass tank
The other one cooked my fish.

I now have My heaters laying on the bottom and I put heater covers on them to prevent heater burns and breakage due to impact against decor or the tank. The heater covers also have suction cups on them so you can placed them on the glass however you like.

I have some forsale if anybody is interested. They are $4 each.
I can't prevent the heater from failures on its own but I can help to prevent my fishes from breaking it.

Here are some pictures

i, m glad to hear your inlines are reliable.. mine didnt last two months. they simply stay swithced on and the tank is not heated. you see the temperature drop each day... i changed four this last year under warranty but replacements were still unreliable.

I was thinking of getting inline heaters, could you tell me what brand and wattage you had??

I use visi therm stealth NO failure great heaters IMO

For starters, I think all heaters should be shatter-proof.

Only time I had a heater fail was from thermal shock. Didnt lose any fish though.

Oh, I had a heater once that wouldnt shut off. Water would get way to hot and I often had to unplug the heater. I lost some fish in that tank dont know if it was because of fluctuating temps or not.

I have had 4 heaters fail recently. 1 was my fault due to accidentally hitting it with a 45 pound piece of granite when moving around some decor in my tank. 2 of them shattered for no real reason, it could not have been the fish unless my tetras were like total ninjas. While the last one committed suicide when the sump pump was off and it never shut off... It shattered and left the water in the sump at almost 110 degrees! good thing I did not turn it back on without noticing it first!

Oh, then the 3 heaters the turtles broke all at once. I did not know until I stuck my hand into the pond (i was standing on the ground, aka grounded) and got shocked with 1500 watts of heater electricity. No dead fish or turtles :)

I am in the process of switching all of our heaters to ebojagers, amazingly reliable but kinda pricey.
