Sounds like "malachite green", even though its blue - that wouldn't cause any sort of growth like that, but will stain all the rocks and silicone in your tank a pretty shade of blue!

Malachite green is GREEN. Sounds like it's actually methylene blue.

Oh, and this is common with new rocks and wood in a tank. I've had it even with well washed wood. Looks like a thick white slime right? It's harmless. I actually usually just leave it in the tank and it usually clears up on its own. Algae eaters will munch on it.

I would clean the tank and see if it helps. Would salt do anything?

Yea, its kinda thick, and it felt slimy, the rocks were really slippery when i took them out.. problem is it seems like its reproducing. the day before last i thoght i removed all of it, did a close examination, then yesterday night i saw some more in scatterd places..

I guess if it doesnt go away in about a month or so, ill just clean everything comletely.

pool filter sand! cheap. and safe for your fish

How long does it usually take to clear up for you? And does it only grow on the rocks/sand, or will it also grow on plants, filters, etc? I dont want to wake up one morning and find my entire tank coverd in white slime.

If it will become a huge tankwide thing i may just go ahead and clean it all out and add new sand..

A couple weeks usually. If it isn't gone by then, you should try some more involved cleaning. I wouldn't freak out and rip everything out of the tank right away though, that was why I posted the advice.

Aaarrrgh - I always get those two mixed up:nilly: I'll try to remember that from now on.

They're very different things. Methylene blue is a relatively gentle treatment that aids in a wide variety of problems--from low oxygen levels or nitrite poisoning, to minor bacterial, fungal, even external parasite infections. It's usually not strong enough to clear those last three up on its own though. Also, it WILL kill your beneficial bacteria, it's best used in a concentrated bath outside the tank if you have no quarantine/hospital tank. People always warn it will dye your tank, but this also depends on the redox levels in your tank... In some cases the blue will turn clear rather quickly but will still be effective. I haven't actually seen it dye silicone personally, but I've seen it dye the top layer of light colored sand.

Malachite green is relatively harsh, and is usually a treatment for external parasites. It is a known carcinogen and I believe it's illegal in CA. It's also more effective when combined with formalin. It usually doesn't affect your bio filter IME. I would only use it with hardy fish with scales if you were concerned about heat/salt resistant external parasites, or if your fish couldn't handle the high heat needed for that treatment.
