I want to breed feeders for my Mantis Shrimp. Im currently breeding guppies in a brackish tank, but im not sure if that is the route I want to go. Im considering Mollies. I like how they get larger but I have some questions.

If a mollie and guppy were to both give birth on the same day...

1. Who would produce more fry that survive to adult hood under normal conditions?

2. How long do each take to mature?

3. After a period of time before either mature which would be larger? (do mollies grow faster or slower?)

Thanks in advanced everyone

you got pics of your mantis shrimp

Not yet I just picked him up and transported him back to Minnesota last sunday. I plan on taking some pics possibly tomorrow and then making a new monster thread for him.

I have to say its everything I hoped for and more!:headbang2

Scares me to put my hand in the tank...its not scared of me at all and is so dang quick!

Guppies reproduce 10 times faster than mollies.

While mollies are bigger, if you want a more readily available feeder source, guppies IMO are the way to go.

really? interesting. Any other input?

i hand out with a lot of "big fish" guys.... ca/sa cichlid owners and we all go through this conversation... i and other prefer guppies... if done right you can produce hundreds of gupp's a month and they grow out to an inch or so in just few weeks mine take about 3-5 all my terrors are on gupp's and i have an enourmous guppy tank for my grandmother.... mollies even though they look bigger tank longer to grow out and are more suceptible to disease imo.... ive never seen a solid molly breeding program though but in my expirience my gupps are better than my moll's ..... set your gupp tank up with java moss all over the bottom and tightily patterned drift or something to let the babies get away from the adults.... once a month or so switch all the adults over to another tank and pull everything to find all your babies... and juvenile/adults they grow quik so pull feeders as needed.... the best way to breed feeders imo is the dual tank method..... breeder nets suck because i dont have time to watch my females decide to give birth you will lose a few and gain a ton so good luck but before u go and start gupp's get some molly's opinions

Does anyone know how long it takes Mollies to grow out to say 1"? I had a fish drop some babies this morning, I got them in a little breeder thing in the tank. Got about 12 or so I think, I am not seriously trying to breed them for feeders or anything, it was just for fun.

They are working real good for dither fish at the moment for my small jewel and two peacock cichlids.
