this may be a stupid question, but i've never done much with the smaller live bearers, just the big ole cats. can platys and mollies breed together?

I would also like to know this. My wife has platies and a couple mollies in her 55 gal.

k thanks, was just curious cuz somehow my buddies mollies are pregnant and he's had them for quite a while. but the thing is there's only two of them in the tank and they're both female but there are male platties in there too.

Im not sure but if they are like guppies then once they have done the deed with the males they can hold sperm for months and can keep popping out babies every few weeks without needing males around.

yes they do the result is a platy colored molly sized sterile fish.

the one we have is of a red wag platy father and a creamsicle molly mother.

That would be like having a naturally reproduced Human x chimpanzee hybrid....

Poecilia can not hybridize with Xiphophorus on the basis of structural differences and likely chromosome variances between the fish. This has been tried many times and has never succeeded. While it "may" be possible..it cannot be done so naturally and even artificially the chances are slim.

Well how can different cichlids of diff genus breed?

Some Fish of different genus can easily hybridize..why is this??? well because we make up names for them. Our artificial category system is not recognized in nature...Please note above the reason for not being able to naturally hybridize has nothing to do with genus or systemics but directly has to do with physical and genetic differences that prevent successful hybridization.
