My profile pic is of my savannah. He was 2 feet in the picture, and is 3 feet now, a year later.
Some max out at 3 feet, but always plan for larger. 5 foot is huge and unlikely. They need a secure cage twice their length by 1/2 their length minimum. They get territorial of such an encolsure as well. Ours was free-roam for a while, but he started to think it was ok to be territorial of our entire room, and not just his closet, we got him in a nice large cage.
If you get him (and I personally think they are wonderful animals if treated with respect), pick up a book called The Truth about Varanus Exanthematicus. It is by far the BEST resource, and only costs about 12 dollars. Just remember even my baby, Toby, has bad days. My fiance has gotten bitten by him once (our falt completley...ok he'll say my falt). The baby we rescued put holes through his nail that lasted 2 months as well. They are strong and very intelligent!
Tegus aren't monitors at all. they are just very large lizards. Monitors are different, and are more closely related to gila monsters than normal lizards.
If anyone is in Ohio or nearby and is interested in Savanahs, let me know. We have a 1 footer we rescued 6 months ago that will be looking for a home soon. Email me, as I'm not on the board very often....work calls
