Agreed they can be on sand when small for a little while ( not long) but ur best bet is to use dirt and sand mixed helps keep humidity up for them witch they need an they like to dig ALOT I recently got one a few months ago and mine has dug in 10" of dirt in like 7 diff spots to make tunnels
 
Agreed about the no to sand. This question is asking a serious amount of times. People think sand because of the mental image they have of a lizard in the wild on sand. Not many are well enough adapted to living on sand in captivity
