monster catfish

well bad new guys i went to his previous owner he said he raised him in 150 gallon pond and he was over 4 years old. he eats like a pig and i have another black id shark and he is 16 inches and 3 years old

I have a 20" albino i.d. thats over 15yrs old i got for free when the store who owned him closed. Granted others from this same batch were close to 40" so agreed theres really no definitive answer to ur question. Some always seem to stay smaller while others grow large fairly quickly. Chances are it will take forever to grow, only 2 out of 12-15 from this lfs exceeded 24-36" in 15-20yrs and they were raised in a 500gal.

I offered these worthless thoughts in another thread:

"Do we know if it is w/c or farmed? There is this notion that some farmed ones, such as Hemibagrus nemurus (most often albino), IDS, etc., are poor growers, which I don't understand as this would ruin the food fish farming business... but, indeed, we have been seeing fishes of abnormally slow growth and attaining much smaller adult sizes, it would seem of both hemibagrus and the IDS. Supposedly due to insufficient attention of the farmers to the maintenance of a healthy gene pool.

The usual thought/conviction is that we in the trade get a tiny % of the fish raised for food.

This conundrum could be reconciled by a supposition that the ornamental fish trade is now getting supplied from a different source than food fish farms and the ornamental fish trade may even benefit from smaller fishes as more hobbyists can house them. They would also benefit as these fish would reproduce poorly too (and are more sickly). All this increases the "ornamental farmers" consumer demand and farmers' security. ATM, this is but my wild thoughts, unsupported by anything."

Wednesday13, I've never come across a captive IDS over 2'-2.5'. Is 36"-40" a folklore or is it provable? I'd be thrilled if it was provable.

I have proof lol...these are the 2 fish im referring too actually in my friends 4k and are from the same batch as mine. They were around 24-28" when we removed them from the stores 500gal and absolutly blew up in this tank in a few months. Theres a very rare brown albino and hes by far the biggest and can be seen towards the back in this pic. Id say hes an easy 40lb fish, they look tiny in this tank but its 14'x7'x7'

Thanks, bro. I know BigRich545 tanks :) I read the thread on his heroic move of this 4000 g tank. I agree these are big IDSs. But by proof, I mean pics with rulers. Without that, the fact is still classified as anecdotal AFAIU.

I figured that was coming lol...due to their situation right now thats not possible until late feb. But im sure rich will be back with a bang soon here. Maybe ill make a trip up there soon, my good friend doubledragon is helping taking care of their fish right now due to their unfourtunate circumstances im not going to mention. Tape measure doesnt lie...but i know how big these fish are as i personally moved them 2yrs ago and meet up with rich/josh every couple months. Knh another ohio member provided them with the 2 other i.d.'s in close comparison so its not like these sizes are too out of the ordinary. The true albino in the pic is 20-24" so that helps put the big guys into perspective even tho it may not be proof lol...

Yeah, I know. Don't get me wrong, I want them to be that big as you say. My purpose is to learn and not to cast doubt or dispute anyone's words. Words are fine, again, for many purposes. I am a scientist and I believe hard data and I then and only then will I be able to tell my Aquarium visitors and others who ask that, yes, IDS can grow in captivity to 40" and here is the proof if needed/wanted.

For instance, I know Arapaimag measures his fish at every opportunity, re-homing usually or death, and I've seen him do it and he records everything - the day he gets them, the source, the size, and so on during the entire fish's life. That's data.

We are dragging this thing off topic. It really warrants a new thread in part because many MFK-ers appear to believe IDS never exceeds 2' in captivity!! I personally was engaged in these discussions. Since you are in position to generate the hard proof, I'd (very conveniently for myself) leave it in your corner :)
