If your GT's literally slaughtered each other how on earth did you get rid of them? In the trash? On your dinner plate?

Haha wow.. here in Holland you really have to search hard for big cichlids. African cichlids, convicts and firemouths are easier to find.

I had a 75 gallon, and was getting my 190 within a week. So I went to buy a Green Terror and Jack Dempsey and 2 convicts, the store owner asked me about my tank size so I told him I was getting the 190 soon, he said:"well I'll see you in 2 weeks then" and he just wouldn't sell me the fish.

Of course there are other stores that sell gibbiceps plecos to everyone.
yeah its nice for the people who actually know what they are doing but for the vast majority of people going into the pet stores here i wish they were more like your petstore, sometimes when i am at the store and i over hear a person getting bad advice i will actually step in sometimes and help the person out and they are always really thankful for actually getting good advice that will allow their fish to live well together. but yeah sometimes fish here that should only be special order are readily available and it just leads to a lot of stunted sickly fish and unhappy keepers wondering why their fish are "mysteriously" dying

Ive noticed here in the UK that larger cichlids, larger fish in general, are very hard to come by. After living from top to bottom of this country, east and west I have only encountered dovii once and in almost 20 years of loving fish that encounter was about 18 months ago. I have seen midas once, and I bought one, juvie RTC once and I have never seen a peacock bass in person nor an asian arowana. I seen my first jardini a couple of months ago on an investigation of near-ish fish stores.

You seem to have to search hard and even then it is a freak shipment half the time but the best way is by special order. From my experience that seems the only way to get your hands on some of the larger species. I am kind of glad that some of the monster species like dovii are hard to come by, there would be epidemic of dovii in shops otherwise much like you see of adult oscars.

:ROFL::ROFL: haha me too.....he was 3/4 in when i got him now hes over 16", and i would feel awful if he was in less than his 125!! i still fell like he needs a 180

after keeping an Oscar in a 29G, I learned never again to trust the guidelines one sees at Petsmart/Petco or in the "how to" books available at the LFS

all I had to do was look at that fish and know, that ain't right . . . (!)

LFS in the USA are just pathetic. I am always telling them to relabel what they have. Just the other day saw a Silver Aro labeled as Top water catfish??? Still priced at a $100 though.

They will sell you anything you want and have no clue what they are talking about half the time. I love messing with them. I'll go in leisurely and wait for them to ask me would i like something and I'll ask them a couple of simple questions and then i'll get serious and ask more and more difficult questions until they start blurting out random crap LMAO!!! It's Hilarious strongly recommend it.

That is true and especially with pet smart and petco. A pet smart near me had red bay snooks and the label said they only grow to 8'' :screwy:.
I am pretty lucky, because I have a LFS near me that has a huge sellection and knowledgable staff. They aways ask about what size tank you have an give advice before selling the fish.

My neighbor is awfull too. He is big on repltiles and does everything to take care of them properly, but doesn't know anything about the fish he has. He said the other day that he bought 8 cichlids for his 65g, and didn't know what kinds he bought. He said he bought 8 fish because he wanted 4 and thought that the other 4 would die because he doesn't care for them like he should. Fish are cheap and expendable to him, unlike his snakes. It really makes me mad when people don't take care of animals they keep.

yeah but you will always run tino a*&holes like that, i mean yeah i think you are going to try and take care of something better if it cost you a fortune but even if it only cost you a penny it is still a life that you are taking into your care that did not ask to be there. i think whatever animal no matter how cheap it costs if you are bringing it into your home and making it rely on you for care, you should do whatever you can in order to provide it with a comfortable life. but alot of people are like "oh they are only fish, they are cheap and dont have emotions so i can treat it like crap and just buy a new one" ugh
