Yesterday was in a LFS and saw this 3~4 inch Gator Gar and was wondering at what size would be best to start switching the fish over to prepared foods instead of live feeders. Thinking of setup a 55G for 2 gators and 2~4 inch Peacock Bass. And also what would be the best prepared food to feed them.

1-the gator will out grow a 55 in 3 months
2-the gator will kll the bass in no time
3-gars and cichlids or bass are a bad combination
4-you can feed them any prepared foods from pellets to shrimp to prawns anything fishy and meaty really

Hmmm, thanx something to think about. Maybe then I'll need to divid the tank, nah probably better to set up two 55G to get things started. :irked: Maybe then it's better to put a few gars in with some crawdads or something, because there awsome looking when there small.

But good too know they'll eat just about anything.

try spotted/florida gars for a starter, but they'll outgrow the 55 soon too.

No thanx, I'll stick with my original choice, if I decide to to go through with setting up a 55 and purchasing them etc. Why should I change to something else that may look simular but really isn't. Plus I have never seen any other gars being offered that small.

Because a gator will outgrow a 55 in about 5 minutes? Not that any other true gar wouldn't, but gator + 55G = not going to work long or short term.

Do you actually know how to ID the different species or are you just looking at what the LFS wrote on the tank and actually think your looking at a gator gar?

This isn't true :irked:.... It may take 3 to 4 months to out grow a 55, which is fine.

But what will happen in 5 minutes, is if I throw them in my 180 now they'll get eaten in 5 minutes or less. :(

if this fish really is an alligator gar (atractosteus spatula), i would suggest doing extensive research before deciding weather or not to purchase one.
