I'm setting up a 55 gal. for African Cichlids but stay with me here Knife fans.
I have a 29 gal. community tank that I had a 7" Brown Knife in and all was great until I came home from work to find that a heater had ****ed up and half the fish was fried, including the brown Knife (my favorite)!
I had got him some time ago when he was 4" and my tank had not been the same, before or since. Great Fish!!!!
I have to drive 50 miles round trip to get to the closest Pet Smart. They was out of them three different times. So I went to a LFS 50 miles away to see what they had. (East Texas sucks around here for LFS)
To my surprise at a Petco they had two special order Knives that no one had picked up. I did not know the care of the Knives that they had and the boy that worked there didn't either. So as I have many times, I went to their book section to find out what I was getting into.
After looking through about six books and not seeing one knife listed, my wife said that she had found them in, Aquarium fish for Dummies:screwy:
I Hate those Dummies :swear:books but that is all we had to go on.
She read that they like to shoal and they get 10" at adult.
Well that sounded good to me, since the browns got to 8".
I was thinking that I had some time to get a larger tank when they needed it....sooooo we said we would take one, but wait! When he moved the rock, there was two! Great! We will take both! after all they are shoaling fish so the more the merrier right!:grinno:

Well once we get home and have the bags floating, I look up the Knives on the only site I trust..MonsterFishKeepers.com:duh:
:WHOA:Oh ****!!! They are Clown Knives and in the wild get 40" and in a tank could get 18-24" or bigger and then I read that they only like to shoal when they are little and are very aggressive to one another when they get big!

I have never been one to walk away from a challenge, especially when it comes to my kids, or pets. What ever I need to do to keep these cool fish Happy and healthy, I will. My wife is so cool too, she was right in there looking for a much bigger tank on the net. I'm not sure how we can make it work but we will! After looking at these guy's on the net for several hours I know that we have the coolest fish out there.

Oh, and after we get a bigger tank for the Ck's we will finish the 55gal. with Africans.

I would love to learn more about these monster fish, so tell me all you wish about your experience. I will read it over and over again.
Thank you all, Monster Fish Keepers!:clap

Clowns are awesome fish. You'll want atleast a 6'x2' aquarium and it seems that given space two clowns will normally coexist.

Also: watch classifieds, kijiji, etc... As you can often find large used tanks for a very good price.

They are cool fish but do require lare tanks, as stated and others will tell you a 180g would be abotu minimum for them. The guy before me said to look on kijiji, I think he means craigslist and the sort, it is true you can get amazing deals there. I just bought a 150 gallon with stand for 200 bucks, my 55 wasn't much cheaper than that. Being that you have some time before the upgrade is necessary start looking, and low balling, and see what you can get. I would say go no smaller than 180 cause then you wouldnt have to worry for quite some time, if at all, about a bigger tank.

Thanks, I wiil check it out!
Keep-em comming!

I've found kijiji better than craigslist for having tanks for sale.

Thanks for the info! I need all the help I can get!

just make sure you have a place or 2 for them to hide. i got mine at 3 and a half a year ago and there already at 20" 21" i got mine at the same time and they have bin fine with each other . they will eat small fish so keeping small fish with them is a no no. and if you are going to keep anything with them make sure its not cichlids as they tend to markup the ckf. mine love prowns and sand eels . they maybe a bit shy at thirs but dont worry they will come out in the day as they get older. these are mine ronnie and reggie. these pics are old i will try get some new ones soon. good luck .

:newbie:This is day three of clown town and all are doing great!. It seems that there is a big difference in the two fish. As I was bringing them home in the bags, the one on my right leg , (that I now call Bozo) jumped and flopped about all the way home. Now he is now the one that comes out the most and that I have seen eat guppies, gold fish, and night crawlers.
Crusty on the other hand never moved in the bag on the way home and now I have seen him swim and hide and that is about it.
Both still look great but one is sure more dormant than the other so far.
Have you seen this in yours and do they out grow this trait?
What size tank do you house yours in?
Right now I have a slick bottom 55 tank, two filters, heater and to very large rocks with a lot of large cave space in each. Bozo is in the left one and Crusty is in the right one and that is how it has been sense the first night.
I know one thing for sure, this is the best goof I could have ever made:clap!!!!!!!!!!!! Both are assume fish that I want to spend as much time with as I can. Thanks Jay:cheers:

Sounds like they're doing great, you should try to get them on pellets soon
