I am raising my own, so with good food and watching my water conditions real close, I hope to not have any problems.

ive seen many many many larger tanks with two knives. they always seemed to get along fine. i would even say it seemed like they stuck together. as long as u get a big tank, i think ur ok

I'm enjoying reading these threads about these fish. I just got my first ck about 3 weeks ago (about 6 inches). I was told he wouldn't outgrow his tank. After some homework I realize that info was wrong. So I had to decide how committed I wanted to be to keeping this fish. This fish is awesome and after all that I've read....I'm pretty committed to keeping him. He's in his own tank (with my other tank also) in the "man cave" where it's normally dim and just me with him. I've seen him chase fish plenty of times but only recently finally got to see him eat. He seems to be perfectly fine with swimming around and eating in the light. I have noticed that he can tell when there are more people in the room. He doesn't seem to be bothered by me but he is more shy when others are present.

I wasn't planning on having a fish that can get so big but I can accomodate him. I'm getting a larger tank for him on wednesday. Trying to figure out what kind of fish can go in there with him. I'm open to suggestions.

Sounds like we are in the same boat. My Ck's are growing like crazy.
I am looking for a really big tank myself.
Who was it that told you that he wouldn't outgrow your tank?:screwy:
These are by far the best fish that I have ever owned in my 40 plus years of fish keeping. I also have a new Brown Knife in one of my other tanks.
From what I have read of tank mates it gets kinda gray on the subject. I have read that large non-aggressive South American Cichlids, Oscars, Rainbow Sharks(Several other non-aggressive non-shark-sharks), African Feather Fin, Giant Danio (dither fish to help keep down any aggression.
I have all these in my tank now except the large SAC.
Please don't just take my word on this, for CK's are new to me to but all seem to be doing really well to gather. There are a lot of other fish that are suggested on the net. Bottom line I guess is if it wont fit in their mouth or if it is to fast and it wont beat them up they might be OK.lol
Good luck with yours.Got pics?:headbang2

Are you sure you didn't do this on purpose Germanram? It's a classic powerplay to get your wife to agree to a tank upgrade. Either way these knife fish are awesome. A friend of mines father had one for around twelve years, It was a beast, ate fish like crazy. I didn't read very thoroughly through the responses but just so you know there are a lot of places over the internet you could shop for supplies if you are having a tough time locally. That Fish Place is good, and they have an awesome selection of fish as well. You tank would be better bought locally though, shipping must be a bear. Either way best of luck. Buy the biggest tank you can. Trust me, if you don't you will wish you did.

pelleeklund, if I was only that smart to have done this for a power play but next time......lol:naughty: I have been keeping an eye on the thrift paper and have see some good deals on used tanks but nothing big enough just yet. I also have my one and only lfs that is close, keeping an ear out for me. She runs her store and takes care of other peoples tanks to, so she said she runs into a customer now and then that wants to sell or give her a tank or two.
I will look the Fish Place up on line and see what they got. Thanks for the info.:arapaimag:arapaimag

The guy who sold him to me said he should stay smaller if I keep him in a smaller tank. I just happened to find a different fish store than my normal place so I stopped in and saw this 14-16 inch ck in a large tank. The guy said he took about 5 years to get that big. Then I saw the smaller one and figured I should have no problem getting a larger tank like that at some point in the next few years if this fish actually did outgrow his tank. So here we are. Getting a bigger tank much sooner than I planned but that's fine.

Good thinking buddy. The name of the store is (That Fish Place) just so you know. It's hard to tell people the name because it turns in to a who's on first thing. Again best of luck man, I look forward to seeing your new setup. Post pictures if you get a chance.
