Grass carp are planktivores. That is wht they are so hard to catch on rod and reel.

was originally introduced into the UK from China for the purpose of controlling aquatic plants of which it can consume in large quantities. But they do take baits corn ,worms and most of all surface baits.

The Grass Carp is not usually fished for as a targeted species but is often caught accidentally when fishing for others. They are very timid alongside a good stock of king carp. This means that they will rarely get to the bait before the other carp.

Grass carp and bighead carp have invaded some of the native waters in my area. The newspaper stories all say they are large planktonic filter feeders. I understand that they probably eat other fare at times. From video footage I've seen of these fish, I would say the best way to catch them would be to drive a boat through a concentration of them. Just make sure to wear a helmet. They get all worked up and jump hundreds at a time. Some big ones might land in your boat.

Well You cant kill grass carp in Florida as they are protected.

Why would grass carp be protected in Florida? Do they protect their exotic species there? Are we all talking about the same species here, or different species with the same common name? If so then it is ridiculous that a government would protect an exotic. They need to do a better job of preventing exotics from getting into our waterways in the first place! And I don't mean by banning aquarium imports either.

Chinese grass carp were originally imported and stocked into Florida lakes in 1972 as part of an experimental effort to control Hydrilla.

found this on line

Stocking of waterways with triploid grass carp is currently becoming one of the more environmentally ideal means of biological aquatic weed control. Triploid grass carp which have been rendered sterile by a number of methods are therefore unable to reproduce yet their appetite for many types of aquatic weeds makes these fish extremely effective for successful aquatic weed control.

however fishing for grass carp (which is illegal under Florida law ) is the most preventable of the overall predator problem.

schneider your getting silver and grass carp confused. Along with the bighead the silver carp are the large plankton feeders. Grass carp aren't a real problem for us. In fact I've only seen a few and they all have been triploid and stocked in ponds for weed controll.
