MONSTER GUAPOTE COMMUNITY UPDATE...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So glad to see this still going, still one of my favorite tank setups ever. Inspired me. I now have a freddy, jag, loiselle, and dovii and hope to complete the colection one day. More pics and vids are always welcome terd!

Oops forgot to ask, how do you get that growth on the driftwood? I am so plant ignorant I dont even know what it is, but I want it!

Wouldnt be a bad idea-she is a nice female.

I wish I had a female dovii. That has always been my long term goal. That is, to have all five Parachromis, all five with at least one pair of each, all five (or more, I have had five breeding pairs, but the Oscars don't count, lol), and to have fry survive. A female dovii is all that's keeping me from reaching the last one.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words. Glad it's working out for you. I love these Parachromis. More than any other species. Their behavior and interaction fascinates me! The next time I do a live feeding, I'll do another video.

As to the wood, it's just algea. You can get the same results leaving your lights on for days or weeks at a time, lol. :D

Thanks a lot for the kind words everybody! It means a lot!

That's it! You have inspired me. No, I won't be making a Parachromis tank but I will be stocking a challenging tank. Many people have said it time and time again that it can't be done just like your Parachromis tank. But I'm going to try it anyway. It's a set-up that I have room to pull off but haven't had the nerve to do it. Looking at your tank has changed my mind. I won't say what cichlids I want to stock. I will wait until it is up and running a while. Why get flamed before I even have the chance to do it, right? Thanks again for sharing your pictures and experiences!

That's what this place is all about and what makes it so great! I used to frequent another site in the beginnings of my participation in this hobby. I won't say the name, but the initails are c-f. Once I moved away from africans to the new world species, I gained the love and appreciation I have for the Parachromis. I had a mix match of what I thought were the most beautiful of the new worlders. Jags, festae, oscars, losiellis, and some others in a 190g.

This morphed into a "what if" with all five Parachromis together. When I posted a diary type thread about actually doing it, it was locked and deleted in just a couple of weeks. People were telling me there would only end up being an orange mushroom cloud where my tank used to be. :D And that it wouldn't last two weeks. So I started another diary type thread a little later and kept the arguing to a minimum. That was three years ago.

I barely ever post on the other site, only to update that old thread which is now more than 60 pages long. The doomsayers have long since disappeared. The rewards I have experienced from risking such a "controversial" stocking have been more than great. It's awesome.

Don't let anyone talk you out of doing what you want. Be responsible and remember it's about the fishes. Keep your fishes happy. Be prepared for and ready to accept losses any time you put fishes together that aren't supposed to be together. Learn from your mistakes and correct them so you don't make the same ones again.

So, thanks for the flattery, lol. Seriously, I appreciate being able to inspire someone else to do something like I did. I think we here at MFK can all understand and appreciate that. We are the ground breakers, the inspiration, the cutting edge, etc.. At the end of the day, it's your tank. Put what you want in it. This thread and my tank wouldn't be here if I had listened to conventional wisdom. That, I think is what MFK is all about, we are the new "conventional wisdom".

Wow very impressive set up and some great looking fish!

Thanks a lot!

What is the growth rate of the Parachromis sp. "la ceiba yellowhead" compared to the others? I've got a dozen small one's and was just wondering what to expect.

I was just looking at a thread about substrates, and saw a couple of pics u had posted a while ago, instantly noticing a large number of parachromis then reading your signiture seeing your stock list. So I found this thread, read through it and am glad I found it. You have done a great job; the tank looks excellent, the fish are nice, and you've given some interesting info about your successes and failures with this set up.
Im glad to hear u had this set up over 2 years, keep it up!
I also agree with u on many of the things u said previously about the guapotes receiving a bad name, that they with rip eachother to shreds. Well I know this to be false as Im keeping a selection of parachromis together (check out my sig). Obviously there have been scraps, for instance I bought a pair of managuense, but one was killed by the other. When I added another larger jag, the smaller was picked on, but it soon stopped. Both these jags are male. I then added a large female dovii, and there was a lot of lip locking occuring, but nothing major. And when I added the motaguense pair they barely got a welcoming at all. They all coexist well; even with the others in the tank - gold saum, jewel and jack dempsy.
It just seems wrong, but it works,
and at the end of the day, it is so worth it; the guapotes are my favourite cichlids
Good Job!
