DUH!

HarleyK-

Check out Ctenopoma, aka Spotted Climbing Perch.. It is one of the few predatory gouramis, and he will inhale whatever can fit into his mouth. Dosn't get very large, very peaceful, and quite striking IMO.. I LOVE this fish.

miles I have a spotted climbing perch too, I really like it/ Just drifts around the tank, but eats a lot, can eat surprisingly large things.

It's also quite aggressive, it defends it's cave and had a go at my peacock bass.

I have notied they are defensive.. I had him in with a pair of breeding kribs, and they would dual all the time.. However, at the same time there were a number of tetras and dwarf cichlids in the tank, and he ignored anyone who wasn't a threat to him.. I would imagine competition for food would make them more aggressive as well. They can be territorial, but I don't know if they would waste their time chasing mollies and other peaceful tankmates.. I think if they were king of the tank with little threat, they would be very passive.

i think birchirs are the best idea i've heard.....they are alot of fun to watch mine will stuff themselves until they have a budge in their stomachs and they are funny to watch take down ghost shrimp and guppies or in your case swordtails.....lol

Miles - what size can I expect it to grow to?
I think there are a few different species, but most only reach about 6" from what I have read.

What is the biggest you've seen in an aquarium?

I seldom see people keeping them, and it surprises me! They are awesome fish.. My buddy has one that is about 4"..

Yeah, I have been looking for Ctenopoma (specifically C. ansorgii) for about two years now. Couldn't find any. LFSs only, though. I guess the reason is their country of origin: Congo (Zaire). Not overly stable politically ...

Thanks a lot, guys, these are great suggestions. I am a bit hesitant regarding the bichir, simply because of my Corydoras.
I was also thinking of oscars, but I am afraid they would turn my tank upside down and inside out. Any experiences with oscars in a planted tank (sand)? They seem curious enough to also harass my butterflies, which I wouldn't appreciate. Oscars are nice "little" buggers, though .... (I just saw them at the LFS yesterdy : 1'' ....)

Actually, Miles' Peruvian gar idea sounds really good ...
