Anybody else into big haps? I'm slowly collecting quite a group of them. So many people are into new worlds for big cichlids. They claim africans are too boring! I like the big haps because they have nicer color, and it's possible to keep more than one fish per tank. I'm tired of tying up my largest tanks for just one fish, or using a divider just to get two fish in one tank! I'm down to 3 tanks of new worlds, but I only have 7 fish in over 300 gallons worth of tanks! When they're gone - more haps!!
Here's what I have in haps so far:
Buccochromis Leptura wc female (she's my hit woman! She killed 2 male buccos and the other female of my original 2 pair, along with 2 extra large male peacocks in my show tank. She's since settled down and her killing ways seem to be behind her.)
Protomelas Mbenji thick lips - I have a very large wc group of these.
Phenochilus Mdoka (white lip phenos) These are very nice and my favorite, the females have the same brilliant color as the males. I'm looking for more of these.
Tyrannochromis nigriventer - growing up some young ones - can't wait until they're bigger.
Tyrannochromis macrostoma - wc pair (very cool fish)
Rhamphochromis Macrophthalmus - I have 3, hopefully a trio - meaner looking than they really are

My want/soon to have list:
Fossorochromis Rostratus (had these before and will again)
Champsochromis Caerulius(also had these before and will again)
too many others to let myself think about.

My lone big tang:
Oreochromis Tanganicae - 1 male left. I had a group of 8 wc adults in my outdoor pond and lost them to mr. blue heron - all in one night. I later rescued said heron after he broke a leg. No doubt when he flew into my fence while coming to get more of my fish! These fish get really big, which is why they were in the pond!

The only drawback to these fish - big tanks. I have several, but you can only set up so many.

Ive got a pair of the giant growing Rhamphochromis esox.. currently at 11 inches, got them at 7'' and they are total nonstop action around the tank.. my female runs the male but they do an equal amount of eating.. way better then any of the SA cichlids i have had.. they have been seperated from the other africans i had in the tank due to my females unbelievably dislike for anything else that moves besides her man..

I myself would like some big haps like Rhamp Macrophthalmus(aka Malawi Barracuda) I just haven't been able to find any. Speaking of New Worlds I put a pair of Fredrichstahlii in with my big Haps and the male has killed everything put my pair of Borleyi. He knocked off a pair of Venustus and a pair of Malawi Eyebiters.

How many tanks do you have? How big are they? You are on Monster fish keepers!

I've got:
300
2 - 180's
150
2 - 125's
3 - 100 longs
90
2 - 75's
60
50
a few smaller tanks.
Plus a 300 outside tank

I'm not much of a picture taker, don't have too many pics. I'll see what I can find.

I doubt there's too many haps that could stand up to the tougher new worlds. They can sure beat up on each other though!

I dont know about that. I had two flowerhorns (yes, nasty hybrid i know LOL they had the most spectacular colors ) anyway i tried to put them in my six foot 135 that was full of africans (male/female borleyi, male/female venustus, a bunch of peacocks and a malawi eyebiter and a couple juvie fronts) all my fish but the venustus were juvies (averaged around 4 inches) and the flowerhorns were close to 8 inches and fat bodied all ready. Those africans kicked the living crap out of them. I even controlled myself and let them try to settle for a bit. If i had not pulled them out the africans would have killed them with in the hour. Even the mellow fronts were attacking them. THey were shredded and gasping for air at the top of the tank. It was shocking to see, knowing the reputation of flowerhorns, since the africans were so much smaller and younger than the flowerhorns. (incase you dont know about them flowerhorns are HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE, think pit bull with scales). The attacks were also different than when you normally see it with a new fish being introduced. They were savage and non stop. Almost explosive in nature. They were not interested in putting them in his place or making them avoid them, they wanted those two dead !

How horrible... i hope i never experience that kind of aggression...

I believe that they sensed that the flowerhorns were a threat and treated them differently. I have always housed my africans mixed, sometimes with fish that are not even cichlids. Those flowerhorns were the only ones that were ever greeted with that level of hostility. I also believe its very possiable that the wives tales about new world and old world body language being different might also explain this.
