Malaysian Trumpet Snails (Melanoides tuberculata) are said to reach about 1" in tank and maybe 2" in the whid. Here are the two biggest I know I have along with a normal one.

Big (1-1/16"):

Bigger (1-5/16"):

Anyone else notice any abnormally large MTS in their tanks?

I find a few lunkers when I bait a trap for them. I hate the f#cking things and wish I never added them. Between 2 tanks I probably throw out a couple hundred a month.

I keep two planted tanks (10g, 29g), and were I to set up a non-planted tank I would go to great lengths to make sure they never got in.

Have you tried Assassin Snails? They'll breed too, but as the MTS population goes down their population should stabilize as well.

I have snail eating fish in both tanks that don't touch the mts but eat pond snails, not sure if assassin snails would be lunch or not.

I'm not a fan of trumpet snails. Someone sent me 10 with a plant order and 2 years later, I have well over 1,000. They somehow got in a non planted cichlid tank and had a population explosion.

I tried to control them with minimal feeding, but it didn't work. So when I rehomed the cichlids, I tore down the tank and set it up with new sand. So far, no snail sightings....... Yet.

Big mistake in me adding MTS in my 75 gal planted tank. Started off with 5...just yesterday (3 months later) I was using tweezers to pick out 70 of those suckers with lots more in the substrate.

Yup, they get ridiculous in no time, I hate them so much. My plant tank runs off a shared sump with my 180. Some made it thru the pump and into the 180, now it's infested.

I actually acquired these MTS from a used sump I purchased that had a few in there. Thought they'd help my cleanup crew so I threw them in. Pond snails, I crush and fishes & shrimps devour them...MTS are so hard, I cut my finger on one. #*¥€%!!!
