i had a pair of sailfin mollies that size but i stupidly put them in freshwater so they died after about 4 months
Sailfin mollies should be fine in FW provided the hardness levels aren't soft and the water acidic. They do best in hard alkaline water conditions and better even in BW. At four months, the fish shouldn't have died unless drastic changes happened in your tank. If the salinity they were in between was very far off, then failing acclimation would have killed them in less than a week.

I always thought sailfins do better in mildly brackish water, anyway the sailfin pair were kept in acid water (i was new to fishkeeping then, so i didnt notice there water prefrences).
