So you think he's one of a kind? How'd you come across him?

I ask about him being one of a kind because I have 3 fish that NOBODY seems to (or will admit) to seeing before, anywhere, so this has me thinking.

How is it possible that one, and only one specimen of a certain fish made it into the country, and never again? Makes you think.

I do not know if he is one of a kind,,but i have posted him other places and no one has ever had one.. And now i am going through {even worse} predicament with the unknown knife that was labled tigre knife.. so i think there are some fish that are just rare.. or rarely caught.. and come in drifts through the decades.. and there are so many yet to be discovered.. when i look up anything about the knife fish it is always vague information.. they never finished investigating the species.. maybe could not get the grants or they themselves died off.. so i am as frustrated as you are.. because when i take the time to look for something... i always expect the information to be there.. but not with fish... :( The experts know alot.. incredible amounts of knowledge but wow they're is so much more unknown..

I know exactly what you're saying! My Leporinus moralesi, L. desmotes, and Barbodes callipterus are driving me crazy!!!! (In those regards, of course)

How old is your cat? How big was he originally? He must be quite a sight upside down at this size :)

I can only quess his age because i bought him when he was already a good 6 inches.. i also bought a Ocellifer from a man who retired from fish hobby and took them to the LFS.. i grabbed them up.. I love Synodontis.. so i would quess he is almost 5 years old.. but he is still growing {slowly}  with so little information on these guys too it is hard to learn their life expectency etc.. but i did find out 12 inches is usually their max size.. we will see  I will post a pic of him up side down soon..funny!!

well i just could not get him to go upside down tonite but i did get some cute pics of him..:)

Hey LIZ, according to my "Revision des Synodontis Africains" by Max Poll (1971), your frontosus should max out at 342 mm or about 13.7 inches! Very nice looking cat!

Thank you and thank you for info.. i will be prepared for a bigger guy.. :D He will definitly be a monster synodontis.. ;)

LIZ, according to the "Catalogue of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa" Boulenger (1909), frontosus is listed at 320mm or about 12.8 inches. However, rather than thinking these are max-out numbers, they are probably more likely just the size of the biggest ones that had been collected at the time! So factoring a large tank, lots of water changes and a good, healthy, varied diet, I would say your cat may have a couple of more inches in him!
